Every year, Apple launches a new iPhone and, for a few days, our social media feeds are basically divided into two groups — people calculating EMI options and people saying, “Bhai, itne mein toh trip ho jayegi.” 😂

And honestly, the second group has a point.

With the latest iPhone duo sitting firmly in the premium-price category, I started thinking about something that is probably worth considering before making that purchase: what if, instead of upgrading your phone, you used that money to travel?

Because depending on the model and storage you choose, the amount you spend on a new iPhone can get surprisingly close to the cost of an international holiday from India.

And unlike a phone, a trip gives you something you can’t put a screen protector on — memories.

Sri Lanka could be your first option

Sri Lanka is probably one of the easiest countries to think about when you start comparing an expensive gadget with travel.

You have beaches, mountains, tea plantations, wildlife, colonial towns and some genuinely beautiful road-trip routes — all packed into a relatively small island.




A well-planned Sri Lanka trip from India can include flights, hotels, local transportation, food and sightseeing without necessarily reaching the price of a top-end smartphone.

Imagine this instead:

Instead of unboxing a new iPhone at home, you’re watching the sunset in Galle, exploring the streets of Colombo, driving through the hills around Ella or waking up surrounded by tea plantations.

That’s a very different kind of upgrade.

Thailand: beaches, food and a completely different experience

Then there’s Thailand.

For Indian travellers, Thailand remains one of the easiest international getaways. Bangkok for the city experience, Phuket or Krabi for beaches, and plenty of food, shopping and nightlife in between.

Depending on how you travel, the cost of a short Thailand holiday can fit into the kind of budget many people are willing to spend on a premium smartphone.

And let’s be honest — coming back with hundreds of photos from Thailand is probably more exciting than having the newest camera sitting in your pocket while you’re still at home. 😄

Nepal if you want something closer

If your idea of travel isn’t necessarily about beaches and resorts, Nepal is another interesting option.




Kathmandu, Pokhara, the Himalayas, temples, lakes and mountain views offer a completely different experience.

It’s also comparatively accessible from North India, which can make the overall trip considerably easier on the pocket.

A smartphone can give you a better camera.

Nepal can give you an actual mountain to photograph.

Vietnam deserves a mention too

Vietnam is another destination I’d seriously consider if the budget starts getting into premium-phone territory.

Think Hanoi’s chaotic streets, Ha Long Bay, Da Nang, Hoi An, Vietnamese coffee and some of the best street food experiences in Southeast Asia.

The interesting thing about Vietnam is that once you get there, accommodation and food can be quite reasonable compared with many other international destinations.




So the same money that disappears into a phone purchase can potentially turn into flights + hotels + food + experiences + photographs from an entirely new country.

But here’s the catch…

I’m not saying don’t buy the iPhone.

If you genuinely need a new phone, use your smartphone professionally, create content, shoot travel videos or simply want the latest technology, then an upgrade can absolutely make sense.

For someone who travels and creates content, a good phone isn’t just a luxury. It’s also a camera, editing device, communication tool and sometimes even a work device.

But if your current phone is perfectly fine and you’re upgrading simply because “the new one has launched”, it’s worth asking yourself one question:

“Do I want a better phone, or do I want a better experience?”

Because that premium you pay for the newest model could potentially buy you:

✈️ Return flights
🏨 A few nights in a good hotel
🍜 Plenty of local food
🚗 Transportation and sightseeing
📸 Thousands of new photographs
🌍 And a country you’ve never seen before

And unlike an iPhone, a holiday doesn’t become last year’s model when Apple announces the next one.

The best purchase might be the one you remember

Technology gets replaced ridiculously quickly.

Today’s flagship becomes yesterday’s phone. Next year, there will be another camera upgrade, another chip, another colour and another reason to upgrade.

But the first time you see Ella’s mountains, walk through the streets of Bangkok, watch the sunset in Sri Lanka or wake up beside a Himalayan view?

You remember that.

So, if you’re currently sitting with the new iPhone duo open on your shopping list, maybe pause for a second.

You might be surprised how far that iPhone money can take you.

Because sometimes the better upgrade isn’t the phone in your hand.
